ABOUT THE AUTHOR
FOREWORD
This book contains 20 improvised solos by Cannonball Adderley representing what I feel is some of his best playing. In selecting solos for this book I was looking for two things. First, I wanted to select solos that would be good material for improving style, phrasing, articulation, time feel, etc. Second, and most important, I wanted to select solos from a variety of contexts that would allow you the opportunity to analyze the phrases and improvisational tools that Cannonball uses so effectively. By seeing how he approaches blues, ballads, modal blues, Bossa Novas and 32-bar standards, it is my hope that you will be able to add to your own musical vocabulary. In my opinion, this is the main purpose of any transcription book. Toward this end, I have included a section beginning on page 1 which describes ways to practice and internalize some of the material contained in these solos.
Finally, in learning to play jazz there is no substitute for listening. I strongly urge you to buy these recordings so you can hear how the solo was originally played. As a matter of fact, one recording, Cannonball Adderley Takes Charge, contains nine of the solos presented here.
