Perhaps he was too popular or maybe it was some of the material the band played - But he was and remains one of a handful of great individuals as an instrumentalist and bandleader in the history of this music. The versatility of the band, in spite of its accessibility, was something special. With the exception of the great Duke Ellington, there was no one ever who knew how to talk to an audience like Julian."
